Power Steering Fluid

Is your car getting hard to steer? Your vehicle should always be responsive and turn easily when you turn the steering wheel. If you are finding that over time this has changed, there are strange noises or suddenly you can't turn, then you know you have a potential issue with your power steering system. Chris's Mechanical in Hawker have a team of highly trained automotive technicians who can diagnose, repair or replace all parts in this system.

Power-steering fluid is the hydraulic fluid that conducts the power in the power-steering system.

In all power steering systems, the seals, O-rings and internal power-steering components wear out through time. When they do they start to break apart, these particles taint the fluid - this means the power-steering pump has to work harder and if not fixed - eventually this will cause it to break down.

Power steering fluid replacement means draining or flushing out your car's old power-steering fluid and then adding fresh power steering fluid. The fluid is the cheapest component of your power-steering system and replacing it when needed lengthens the life of other, more expensive power-steering parts like the power-steering rack and the power-steering pump.

Signs that your power steering fluid might need replacing include:

  • A whining or squealing noise when the wheels turn
  • The wheels of your car are becoming more difficult to turn

Do you check my power steering fluid when you service my car?
